Introduction:
Rare is a fast-growing, international conservation organization that runs state-of-the art communication and outreach projects which empowers local communities with the tools to solve their own conservation challenges. Rare’s innovative conservation leverage social marketing strategies to fuel projects located in more than 50 countries around the world. Named to Fast Company magazine’s list of “Top Social Capitalists” for the last four years in a row, Rare is committed to bringing a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity to solving one of this century’s great challenges – changing human behavior to make conservation possible.
All Rare projects are managed by local partners; our focus is on building community support for conservation and developing local communications capacity among the world’s leading local environmental organizations. Rare has trained 150 local conservation leaders implementing dynamic change processes in 40 countries. These “campaign managers” work for the largest and the smallest conservation organizations globally, including The Nature Conservancy, WWF, and Conservation International.
The Opportunity:
To further leverage our investments at both the local and international levels, Rare has launched RarePlanet.org, a multi-lingual community platform that connects local and global conservation efforts and promotes collaboration among campaign managers worldwide. RarePlanet.org is designed to support social networking and communication for communities of practice and training cohorts, as well as project management workflow for campaigns. As the Vice President for RarePlanet.org, the ideal candidate will develop and execute our strategy to make RarePlanet.org into a globally accessible, self-sustaining knowledge and expertise-based community dedicated to improving the practices of conservation and increasing the world’s commitment to conservation.
We seek a leader to drive RarePlanet.org who is creative, web-savvy and a results-driven community builder> The Vice President of Rareplanet.org will be responsible for building the strategy for engaging and connecting local conservationists who are working in remote and critically threatened natural areas with one another and to help provide expertise and resources that will make them more effective. This includes managing the implementation of RarePlanet.org – developing and working with a team developing online tools for conservation communities to collaborate, spread their innovations and to support one another. Over time, this network will seek increasing support from donors and the general public, but the first priority is making Rareplanet.org work for the local conservationists who matter most.
Job Description:
The Vice President, RarePlanet.org will:
• Direct a global team to design, develop and execute a strategy for a global conservation network leveraging Rare’s core competencies and using RarePlanet.org’s strategy and network.
• Project manage platform development community building, content creation, content management, and reporting components
• Develop and create global engagement strategies to ensure adoption and meaningful usage of the online network and offline activities for Rare’s various audiences which include conservation experts, partners, and campaign manager alumni.
• Web 2.0 proficient with continuing studies in latest online trends and tools and a business orientation toward monetizing access to the network and unique intellectual property
• Ensure integration into Rare’s ongoing training and campaigning operations around the world
• Ensure that ideas and learning are captured and disseminated throughout the network across multiple languages
• Attract industry and subject matter experts as contributors to the network
• Develop strategies and platforms for network members to collaborate on tools and solutions to global challenges
• Build global volunteer teams to assist with content management, translation and site development
• Facilitate successful long-term conservation strategies by creating and maintaining a global database of partnerships, best practices and case studies, and conservation expertise within the global online platform.
Qualifications:
• Proven experience in developing the vision, business model and strategic plan for online communities
• Proven success nurturing donor relationships
• Experience in building niche online communities or evidence of innovative web/network design
• Ability to convene and engage purposeful communities through both online and face-to-face interaction
• 4 years project management experience with staff located in remote or global offices
• Master’s degree preferred with an international business and/or environmental conservation
• Extensive work experience in social networking or alumni relations
• Strong network of key players in the national, regional and international nonprofit and conservation community.
• Written and spoken proficiency in English required, Spanish proficiency strongly preferred. Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese or French helpful
• Intercultural/multicultural experience and attitude
• Note that willingness for significant international travel is required (20%).
