Mobile and Online Community Strategists Seeking Best Practices, ROI, and Ways to Extend Online Communities to Mobile

9 April 2008

Mobile Communities Unconference provided an arena for companies in online community and social networking businesses to share knowledge and strategies on the emerging new industry

San Francisco, CA – April 9, 2008 – Forum One Networks, a strategy and research group specializing in online communities, lead an innovative “open space” unconference on March 20th to discuss the implementation strategy and monetization of mobile communities. As advancements in mobile communities continue to accelerate in European and Asian markets, companies in the United States are still trying to determine the community opportunity in the mobile market and the best way to bridge the web to mobile gap.

The unconference gave attendees the opportunity to discuss strategies and best practices to implement as they build their mobile communities and mobile social networks over the next one to three years to meet the demand of the expanding US mobile market. Companies seeking information on how to develop successful mobile strategies are looking to early mobile and mobile-to-web innovators like Twitter, Facebook and Utterz for direction. The question on everyone’s mind was ‘how will the mobile community market be monetized?’ Will carriers inherit the expense, or will marketing and advertising be the main source of revenue for mobile communities and mobile social networks?

There were two key takeaways from the Unconference – there is an incredible opportunity for social networks and online communities to expand their services via mobile applications and there is a huge unrealized opportunity for domestic carriers to offer more community building and social networking experiences. Forum One Networks’ Mobile Communities Unconference provided the attendees with a forum to discuss these emerging trends, opportunities and strategies with each other in an “open space” environment. The Mobile Communities Unconference drew attendance from top companies including: Google; Cisco; Nokia; YouTube; Yahoo; Utterz; MobileLife; AOL; VMware; SAP; FunMobility and 3jam.
