Director of Online Community & Content at SmartLife
Description
A fully funded, startup nonprofit social enterprise seeks ambitious full-time editor, writer, and online community manager.

Tasks to include:
You will be responsible for navigating the magazine to popular and critical success
and report to the project director.
Editor (50-60%)
-Provide thought leadership
-Develop the editorial policy, style guide, point of view, and calendar
-Develop editorial strategies that bring our point of view into the mainstream
-Manage the day-to-day production of a provocative, high quality stream of content
-Cultivate and manage a team of motivated freelance, volunteer, and intern writers
-Edit and help develop contributors’ pieces
-Manage editorial budget and all administration related to editorial functions
-Monitor traffic and topic trends, constantly optimize editorial based ongoing analysis
-Engage the audience in co-creating the content and editorial direction
-Engage key project stakeholders on editorial issues with project director
-Establish protocol for marketing content as part of the publishing process
-Lead management of site including maintenance, optimization, and user experience
Writer (25-35%):
-Write opening article for the magazine
-Write and source remaining seed content for magazine launch
-Periodically write key thought pieces to round out the point of view of the magazine
-Continually contribute blog pieces that shape online dialog on relevant topics
Online Organizer & Marketer (15-25%)
-Create an online organizing and marketing strategy
-Develop a team of volunteers and interns to help you execute the strategy
-Build relationships with key bloggers, create content and traffic sharing partnerships
-Establish and maintain a presence on major social media platforms
-Continually optimize social media investments
-Develop and manage contests or promotions that engage the audience
-Foster commenting and dialog on magazine
-Grow RSS and other subscriptions
-Scan key blogs for relevant posts, engage in discussions
The Candidate:
-Must have at least 3-5 years professional experience as editor and writer with at least 1-2 years experience online.
-Experience managing diverse content contributors and enforcing style guidelines
-Bachelors degree or higher in English, Journalism, or related field
-A demonstrated interest in our topic area
-Experienced blogger and social media user
-Located in the San Francisco Bay Area
-Proficiency with content mgmt systems, HTML, and producing multimedia content
-Ability to organize, prioritize, and carry out competing priorities on tight
deadlines
-Excellent attention to detail
-Demonstrated thought leadership
-Experience addressing a young adult audience
-Self-starter
About the organization:
The organization, temporarily named SmartLife, is a Tides Center project committed to promoting sharing as a rewarding personal choice that also happens provide many social and environmental benefits. The organization is fully funded for four years by a private family foundation. The organization has contracted with Free Range Graphics,
an award winning multimedia production company focused on social change, to develop the organization’s identity and website. The site is scheduled to launch in early September.
