National Geographic’s Animal Jam is an Online Virtual World for Kids 5-9

Can you envision an online play experience that combines fascination with the natural world with the elastic imagination of a child? Can you build a bedrock community management team for this world, then help us innovate within it in endless fun, off-the-wall directions?

The right leader for this position will have extensive experience in online safety, community building and event planning for the 4-6 and 7-9 year old age ranges, and deep empathy with these demographics.

This is a nimble, streamlined team of veteran game developers that values raw creative energy coupled with the ability to create and execute detailed management plans. Candidates must be highly conversant in the current landscape of online virtual worlds for kids. They should be able to build and run a community management team that thinks like kids, then executes like pros.

Responsibilities:

All aspects of Customer Service and Community Relations, whether performed by outside contractors or by Smart Bomb employees, will ultimately report up through this position. This individual will be responsible for specifying and building the community management team for a world-class online destination for kids that will launch in 2010.

* Moderation responsibilities in and out of game
* Customer service management, including game, tech and billing
* In-game events planning and staffing
* Community outreach via fansites, parent groups, game press / blogs, activists, etc.
* CRM software – specification, service and monitoring
* Implement best practices for child safety online
* Beta planning and feedback
* Website content planning and oversight
* International localization and CS planning
* Establish and moderate forums / blogs
* Liaison with National Geographic regarding all event planning and community management issues
* Participate in meetings with the marketing team and advise on marketing strategy
* Participate in meetings with the creative team and speak for the user community in design direction

Qualifications:

* BA / BS required; ideally including educational background in child development or education
* 5 years online community management experience
* 3+ years of director-level experience, including increasingly significant management roles with sites designed for kids under 10
* Experience building social communities and persistent experiences
* Excellent personnel management and organizational skills
* Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
* Passion for the industry and an understanding of market trends and best practices
* Willingness to accept and provide direction, work well under pressure, and handle multiple tasks
* Ability to work well within a team environment, collaborating closely with engineers, artists, and team management
* Enthusiasm for wild animals and the natural world preferred
